I owe you an apology.
For years, I treated you like you were just an extension of the rest of my hair — when in reality, you were always more fragile, more sensitive, and more in need of care.
I pulled you.
I slicked you back with gel.
I glued wigs onto you.
I let hot combs and blow dryers pass over you without hesitation.
I didn’t tell hairstylists to be gentle when they combed you.
I didn’t stop braiders from picking you up when you should have been left alone to breathe.
I ignored dryness, breakage, and thinning — hoping you’d just “bounce back.”
You didn’t.
You Were Never the Problem
Looking back, you weren’t weak.
You were overworked.
Years of tight styles.
Years of trying to look “laid.”
Years of prioritising appearance over protection.
I asked too much of you and gave too little in return.
I didn’t wear silk bonnets consistently.
I didn’t always protect you at night.
I skipped treatments.
I rushed through care.
And when you started to disappear, I felt embarrassed — instead of listening.
I’m Sorry I Didn’t Protect You
I’m sorry I didn’t recognise that you needed something different from the rest of my hair.
You didn’t need more manipulation.
You didn’t need to be forced into every style.
You didn’t need glue, tension, or heat.
You needed patience.
You needed nourishment.
You needed rest.
Most of all, you needed me to advocate for you.
What I’m Committing to Now
Moving forward, I’m choosing to treat you with intention.
That means:
Less pulling, less pressure
Being vocal in salons about gentler handling
Prioritising moisture and treatments
Letting you rest — even when it’s not “aesthetic”
Covering you properly at night with silk and satin
Accepting that healing takes time
I’m learning that care doesn’t have to be dramatic. It just has to be consistent.
